Killing Pixies Releases New Single “Bullet”
By: Cypress Stroscheim
On Feb 10, Detroit based pop-punk band Killing Pixies dropped the song “Bullet”, the first single since their pro-choice anthem “Killing Fetus” released in October.
Killing Pixies is a quartet made up of vocalist Pixie, guitarist Lorelai, bassist and backing vocalist Larissa, and drummer Jax. Killing Pixies also dropped the single just before a couple of performances in Detroit and Hamtramck along with some performances out of state.
Throughout the band’s career, the sound of Killing Pixies is a time capsule of all of the best components of late ‘90s/early 2000s pop punk. The same can be said for the new single “Bullet”.
The vocals of Pixie are reminiscent of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, specifically in their All We Know is Falling era. The snarky and witty lyricism can be compared to that of Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day.
The bass along with the drums adds a solid foundation to the song. In addition to the bass, the guitar on top creates another high-energy punk song that the group has become known for in the local punk scene. If this song was released 20 years ago, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it appear in the soundtrack to a coming of age movie or even a Tony Hawk video game.
Along with being a pleasure to listen to, they are also a treat to see live. The energy in their recordings carries through to their live performances. Along with making appearances in Chicago for the sound of the street festival and Milwaukee’s Wastement, the group is performing on February 16th at Outer Limits Lounge and opening for PollyAna at the sanctuary on the 19th.
Killing Pixies is a group I would definitely recommend catching any time they’re performing.
